We’ve partnered with our friends at global photography site Feature Shoot to spotlight some of the most compelling images in our Offset collection. This week, we join photographer Dani Planas Labad on an awe-inspiring Icelandic odyssey.
Barcelona-based photographer Dani Planas Labad was initially drawn to Iceland for the purity and untouched, feral nature of its landscape. The photographer and his wife visited the country in August, when sunlight shines brightly for all but a few hours of the day, traversing the breadth of the diverse and enchanting terrain over a 20-day period.
Labad stopped off at the active volcanic region surrounding the wetlands of Mývatn lake and at the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, on which float luminous blue icebergs, his eyes consistently enchanted and his camera moving across the vast expanses of land and water. The view over the 11 square-mile, 218-yard deep Jökulsárlón, in particular, was nothing short of awe-inspiring, while other highlights of his trip included the Godafoss waterfall and the Snæfellsnes peninsula.
In addition to the hikers and explorers sprinkled across the terrain, Labad encountered some non-human friends, including the Atlantic puffins of the South Coast, who allowed him to approach at close range. Fortuitously, he was able to see the colony before they flew south just a few days after their visit. The travelers also were also able to observe the dolphins and whales that swim across the Skjálfandi bay.
When asked what inspired him most about Iceland, Labad responds simply, “Everything!” The atmosphere of expansiveness and freedom was infectious, and three years after that first visit, he still remembers the open wilderness, the hip 101 district in Reykjavík, and the aroma of fish soup. For photographers visiting Iceland, he recommends first to wear warm clothes, and second, to immediately begin shooting — no matter which way you turn, you’ll find something worth photographing.
